Apple unveils brand new iPod Touch, touchscreen Nano, all new iTunes and Apple TV

Cupertino based company Apple Inc, the company behind the popular Mac range of computers as well as the iPod and iPhone, has unveiled a brand new range of entertainment products in an event held as part of a press conference in California.

The new line of iPods include a touchscreen nano device. Instead of buttons, the device uses controls placed directly on the screen. Additionally, the company's popular iPod Touch - something of an entry level iPhone - has been revamped to include, among other features, the company's new 'Facetime' feature, which was introduced when the company unveiled its new iPhone.

Steve Jobs, the company's co-founder and Chief Executive, also pointed out that the entertainment software Apple owns, iTunes, will include social features - allowing users to see what their friends are listening to and so on.

Apple TV, a product regularly dismissed as a 'pet project' for Apple, has been completely revamped as well. It has been designed with renting and buying high-definition movies in mind.

New iPhone OS is cool...but not revolutionary

If you have an iPhone or an iPod Touch and you've plugged your device into your computer today, you may have noticed that iTunes has a few surprises for you. The first is that Apple's new iOS 4 (formerly iPhone OS) is now available for all 2G and 3G iPods and 3GS and 3G iPhones.

Sure, the new updates are pretty cool. You'll enjoy being able to set your own background (unless you're on an iPod Touch 2G, where wallpapers are not available), and also being able to effectively organize your numerous apps into cleverly named folders.

However, the download time is tedious, taking almost an hour for users with slower internet connections. The real question will be whether or not it is worth it to spend an hour or more without your beloved iDevice.

Ready to download? Wired Magazine has suggested the following:
1. Upgrade your iTunes version to 9.2.
2. We recommend you back up your data before running the install, so plug in your iOS device via USB and hit Sync.
3.  When you’re done syncing, click Check for Update.
4. Download iOS 4, then follow the on-screen instructions to install. And you’re done!
