The Church of Scientology accused of forcing expecting mothers to have abortions

The Church of Scientology, with it's high profile celebrity members such as Tom Cruise and John Travolta, is beginning to show a much darker side, as revelations emerge that show it forced some members to have abortions, saying that children 'interfered with productivity.

The St. Petersberg Times, which has been investigating the church and its members for years, has released a long winded report that details stories of expecting mothers who were pressured into having abortions.

If true, the allegations would be, without much doubt, the most damning evidence brought against the church, which was founded around the beliefs of the late science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard.

The Church, according to the allegations, discouraged having children within what is known as the "Sea Organisation", a division which some of the woman allege has working conditions comparable to that of human trafficking.

Since 1996, the division has had a strict "no kids allowed" policy. [Video via St Petersberg Times]
