Blue Chip founder avoids jail-time

Mark Bryers, one of the founders of failed finance company Blue Chip, has escaped a prison sentence and being ordered to pay only around $37,000 in fines.

In addition to the fines, however, Mr Bryers has been sentenced to 75 hours of community service.

Many investors in Blue Chip had reportedly pleaded that Bryers be jailed, however his lawyer commented this morning that he expected there to be no jail time for his client.

The Blue Chip case raises the debate of white-collar crime, and how it should be treated in court as opposed to the treatment of cases involving other forms of crime.

Justice Chris Field was the judge on the case.
